Awards
We’ve only just got over the BAFTA celebrations, but as per norm, here are we are again getting all excited about the 79th annual Academy Awards.

The past year has certainly been a bit of a Brit fest in terms of the silver screen, what with The Queen and Notes On A Scandal breaking the box office not just at home but also on the other side of the Atlantic. Our female leading ladies continue this success as they make a bit of an impact of the Oscar role call, with Judi Dench, Helen Mirren and Kate Winslet all vying for attention in the category of Best Actress.
The BAFTA’s are usually a good indication of who will be carrying home an Oscar just weeks later, and this year we saw Will Smith (The Pursuit of Happyness), Helen Mirren (The Queen) and Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland) all walk away with a smile on their faces, whilst The Queen won Best Film and Little Miss Sunshine bagged Best Original Screenplay.
All of these are up for the same categories at Los Angeles, so no doubt there are a few nervous speech rehearsals and dress fittings taking place right now. It must be quite a tense time for Martin Scorsese particularly, who despite receiving six previous nominations still has no statuette to adorn his mantle piece. His feature, The Departed, nominated for Best Picture, is however heavily tipped to swipe the award this year.
Other favourite nominations include Best Costume for The Devil Wears Prada, as one would hope, and Best Adapted Screenplay for Borat, nice to see the American’s can laugh at themselves.
